Latch, is a core part of the Type1 EV charging connector. It holds the plug in place and prevents it from falling out of the charger socket. In addition, users can press a button to interrupt power. However, the latch is easily damaged as some users directly throw it away after use rather than putting it back into the holder. In the worst-case scenario, this could result in thermal disconnection, arcing, burning, or electric shock to the end user.
So how to extend the life cycle of latch?
❌ Some Type1 cables integrated with one piece latch to extend their lifespan. However, it is not 100% secure as the latch is not 100% wrapped. Also, we can't replace the latch if it breaks, which means the entire charging connector is no longer usable.
❌ Some Type1 cables offer an open latch that is exposed and unwrapped. The risk of breakage is high, and while the repair cost is low, users can simply replace the latch with a new one, which costs no more than $1.
Is there any way to get the best of both worlds?
